Jamila
Well, I’ve got some things that I want to talk about my website with regards to my target market, because I’m kinda like, I’m confused. And I think that if I’m confused, people who land on my website is going to be confused as well, because I’m new to the business, right, and I’m still trying to find my way when it comes to niching down. So, so far, I haven’t niched down because I’m not sure where I want to go. And I keep changing direction slightly, and I think that’s being reflected in my website. So I want to try to narrow that down and hit the target.

Adela Mei
Yeah, let’s explore that. Because you’re exactly right. If we keep shifting, people don’t know where they are.

Jamila
Yeah.

Adela Mei
If you’re confused, they’re confused. And I’m sure I said that on a blog post or something like, if we’re confused, we’re not putting out a consistent message so they’ve got nothing to grab onto you, because you’ve already changed. And you’re doing something different.

Jamila
Yeah, so I’ve got like, two ideas. I’m thinking, can I? Is it possible to have two niches? I don’t know.

Adela Mei
Yeah. Tell me about your ideas for these potential two niches.

Jamila
Right. Okay. So, like I said, so at the moment, I’m a general web designer. So I’ve designed websites for local business businesses in my area. So mainly, since I’ve started, I’ve been getting referrals and friends. Okay, I think I actually advertised once, put myself out there once. And I got that client. And I didn’t do it again. So I haven’t you know, so work is, you know, it’s gone slow. And I have to put myself out there again.

So I want to, I’m trying to put like a strategy in place to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. So I’m always making myself visible. But with the target market, I keep hearing you know, I have to niche down, I have to niche down, and I just haven’t, I haven’t decided on what I want to niche down with. So I’m finding the local, building local websites, mainly I’m getting like, contractors, which is good. But I’ve also done a website for a life coach, and I found that really good as well. I like that as well.

So I think, I’m okay with building the websites for local business owners, which is fine. And then I have another idea, which is building websites for women only, and empowering women. Because in my past, my past jobs, I’ve always worked with women.

I founded two charities, worked with women, I’ve worked with women in hostals and so forth. I was a manager for that. So I like helping helping women. So I’m thinking maybe I could concentrate on helping women, empowering women who want to get into business.

When I was working with the life coach, there was a lot of things she didn’t know about like how to set up the business. Maybe I could do something for women in that respect. And also just focus on designing websites for women, but I am just not sure. And that’s where I’m getting a bit confused with. I don’t know which one to pick. Can I not do both? If I did both, I was thinking, is it possible? What if I decided that I wanted to niche down for women only? Could I then, how would I go about changing the website that I’ve got already because it’s heavily focused now on designing local websites.

Adela Mei
Now, when I’m listening to you speak, when you talk about empowering women, focusing on women in business, your whole energy lights up and you change. And it’s really clear that you get very animated about that.

Jamila
Yeah.

Adela Mei
So I wonder if maybe you’re just reluctant slightly to let the other niche go. Because maybe you’ve fear of missing out, maybe fear of missing work or clients. Sort of the two things don’t have to be separate. What about if you focus on local businesses empowering women in local business, and you actually just join the two and to be honest, you will still attract the right clients because they’ll want to work with you. And some of them may still be men in local business.

But your expertise, your passion, and your energy is really you’re speaking to me when you’re saying your experience and where you’ve worked and you want to work with women.

Without telling you what to do, I would steer you right into that niche. And remember, you can change in the future. You can always be adapting and evolving. But imagine, when you’re speaking to a potential client, if you’re infusing them with that energy, and that passion, that’s what they’re going to feel and connect with.

And it’s natural for you to do that, instead of trying to fit yourself into a maybe more mental idea of what you think you should be doing.

Jamila
Yeah.

Adela Mei
I would, just hearing you talk about it, I’m going to repeat myself, the energy is with creating this new thing. Now, remember, with your existing male clients, they can still refer you. You can still build sites for them. You can still take the referrals. Your website doesn’t have to speak to them.

Jamila
Okay.

Adela Mei
I would always say: Who do you want to speak to now? Today? And then thinking next year, it’s only like, on the horizon, isn’t it in 2022 – Imagine, who do you want to be talking to? Who do you want to be attracting? You know, what conversations do you want to be having? How would you like your group to grow? And if all your, you’re not going to be teaching plumbers how to build websites are you?

So we can kind of I think we could let go of that. But again, remember, if you because I get the odd referral from what I wouldn’t say was my ideal client. But it doesn’t stop me choosing to take on the work if I would like to, or not. The idea with niching is that when someone finds you, and that’s through your messaging, your web site, your branding, your SEO, everything. They’ll find you because they’ve got a pretty good indication you’re going to be a good match for them.

Jamila
Okay.

Adela Mei
You might start putting off the plumbers and the carpenters. Or you might not. You might be too busy and you’ll have to subcontract.

Yeah. And I’m also thinking because I’ve got, it’s going to be more work now, isn’t it? If I do. Yeah. You said I’m kind of like, oh, well, that’s already there. Just carry on with what I’m doing. But you’re right. I’m still ,my passion probably is to work with women. So I just need to do that. Yes, that’s given me more clarity, then. Sometimes we just need people to confirm what we were thinking right.

You only know by actually trying and starting to take the steps. Because you’re actually going to lose anything. And failure isn’t possible.

Yes, true. You only fail to learn.

Yeah. What are soe next steps that you think you could take to just, because imagine you don’t have to cut everything off and start again. You can just start pivoting, just slowly. And then it won’t feel like such a big shock that you suddenly changed your business, because you haven’t really.

I suppose what I could do is start planning out to build out my homepage. So leave the homepage as it is, build out another homepage in the meantime. So I think that’s what I could slowly pivot that way. Yeah, I might start doing that. And I do understand about the target. That’s the whole point of a target, right, is that you’re gonna hit your target, if you actually niche down. So okay, so I’m going to niche down to women only.

My perspective is always to go after what’s called a psychographic. So it’s a type of person that I am attracting, not necessarily an exact type of business. So I’ve never gone after local businesses here, bricks and mortar businesses. And I’ve also not niche down into coaches. But when I, when I look back over my clients say the last couple of years over 75% have been coaches.

So I could take the stance, and I am maybe verring this way, of really being very clear that I’m a strategist and a coach for coaches. And that’s really niching down. So, in my mind, if this is helpful, it’s like on the horizon, if I wanted to keep fine tuning, that is a direction I could take. At the moment, I still have a wide variety of types of clients, but they all have the same mentality – so psychographic.

Jamila
Oh it’s the type of person.

Adela Mei
Yeah, it’s the type of type of person you want to work with. So for me, I’m really into the environment and wildlife conservation. And anyone who is there to empower other people. So you are in my psychographic, you want to empower women, to get them I’m guessing to be independent run their own business. So that’s a psychographic. I’m really attracted to.

OK I get it now. We just hit the mark. I understand now.

Brilliant.

Then it’s, I don’t target say my local area or even with SEO, I don’t target my local area. I’m inviting that type of client. If they’re a coach, they want to launch an online course. They want to build more clients, anything like that. And then I support them with strategy, website, social media, whatever they need. It’s a wider, wider services. And that’s what came to me when you were talking. You have more skills in your, more tools in your kit, than just web design. There’s a lot of emotional intelligence required when you’re working with business women and empowering women, you’re not just building them a website, you’re giving him a lot of other support.

Exactly. Which, and I really enjoy that, because that’s what I’ve done in my past. I’ve always done that in my past work. And that, you know, like helping women in domestic violence, or adult women that were homeless, and that, you know, and I really is, you know, connecting with women and will help them to come out of that space has been been really uplifting. And that’s so yeah, so I’ve got a lot to give in that area. Yeah.

If you imagine on this one hand, you’re niching into attracting a certain kind of women in business. Your, if we talk about branding for a little bit, your values are where you can really shine, and everything you’ve just told me I think should be on your website as part of your background. You know what that’s like. You can empathise with people, you know how difficult it is to build something from nothing.

Jamila
Yeah, yeah.

Adela Mei
These things are like, you’re not, you know – a business coach said this to me years ago, she just looked at me and went ‘Adela you are not a web designer’. And I remember that forever. And you’re not a web designer, either. Your bigger mission, if you want to call it a spiritual purpose is much bigger. If you don’t mind me saying.

No, I definitely connected that. It’s like, you get me, which is really good. Yes, I’m connecting with that definitely. I feel a lot more clear, more clear what I want to do now. I feel like quite excited. Now.

It’s very interesting how your body responds to information. Our bodies tell us so much, when we get animated and or our eyes light up. And we suddenly see truth or clarity. And it’s possible. That’s the thing, you’re seeing like a possible future. Because it’s like really what. I’m not saying it’s your life purpose, I probably won’t go that far, or maybe I will go that far.

It’s what will motivate you, and drive you when maybe we’re having an off day, right? We all have off days. What is it that’s going to get us up in the morning? What is it that’s gooing to get us on a meeting with someone, when maybe we don’t really want to, we’re exhausted. It’s raining. A million reasons. But when we remember why we’re doing, what we’re doing, then that’s what motivates me anyway.

I want people to know that they can be independent and free, and earn money and self sufficient and be their own bosses and be in control of their own lives. It is possible. I know that because I’m doing it.

Jamila
Yeah, I’m doing it as well. Trying to do anyway.

Adela Mei
You are doing it. I mean, taking lots of steps. I think you just needed someone to go ‘Yeah, keep going. Absolutely’. It’s really wonderful.

Jamila
Yeah, that’s great. Thank you for that. I’ve got a lot to think about. I’ve got a lot to do now.

Adela Mei
I do like giving people homework. I’m glad that was really helpful.

Jamila
Yeah, I think we’ve talked about all of it. Strategy….
